The chief characters o£ this genus are the long and conspicuous crest, which is black in the male and rufous in the female, the absence of a concealed white dorsal patch, the somewhat small bill, the depth about one third the length of the exposed culmen, the almost square wing, the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh primaries longest, the second primary about equal to the ninth, the rounded tail—the two middle feathers longest, being about six tenths the length of the wing. 356.
