The office of sheriff has al-ways been filled by competent men and the present incumbent, Mr. James C. VanPelt, is no exception to the rule. Mr. Van Pelt has made a remarkable record forhimself and has introduced a new departure that will certainly tend to lessen crimein this locality. He has purchased a number of valuable bloodhounds that success-fully trail a culprit from the place of his deed. Among those who have served on the board of county commis-sioners with distinction may be mentioned Mr. Mike OLeary, who has served twoterms with perfect satisfaction to the people. Mr. OLeary is a native of Irelandand came to the United States before the civil war. He was a confederate soldier inthe First Texas regiment from 1861 to 1865.
