Blue Vase from Pompeii

This is the so-called Blue Vase that was uncovered in Pompeii, the city south of Rome (actually near Naples) that was covered with ash and pumice in the .79 eruption of Vesuvius. This cameo-style vase shows Cupids gathering grapes. In the scene pictured here, one Cupid plays a reed pipe. The scene appears to be one honoring the god of wine Dionysus (also called Bacchus and to the Greeks he was Dionysos). The vase is of blue glass with the bas relief of white enamel. The vase is now housed in the Naples Museum in Naples, Italy.
