The Middletown settlers were very sharply divided. Even theboys at school became bitter partisans. It is handed down bytradition that a quarrel occurred l)etweeu two of the school-boys,?one Isaac Dumoud a sou of Peter, and the other a boy by the nameof Markle. The latter called Dumond a rebel; and in retiu-nDuuiond struck him. An encounter ensued; and probably otherboys took sides. The matter ended in the breaking up of theschool.
