Genuine Smile
Woman with a genuine or "Duchenne" smile, named after Guillaume Duchenne, a 19th century French physician who studied the physiology of facial expressions. Duchenne identified two distinct types of smiles: the genuine smile, which involves both the zygomatic major muscle (which raises the corners of the mouth) and the orbicularis oculi muscule (which raises the cheeks and causes the muscles around the eye to contract); and the fake smile, which only involves the zygomatic major muscle (, the mouth but not the eyes).
