Turneris probably true and of sufficient interest torepeat : The commonest tumour of the jawsand the commonest cvst of bone is a dentalcyst. In the early stages of development of adental cyst its presence may be quite unrecog-nizable, and untU the bone shows some changein one of the alveolar plates symptoms or signsare absent. A small cavity in the bone maybe accidentally discovered in a radiographwhen the tumour is of sufficient size. The earliest symptom is usually the presenceof a rounded swelling of the outer alveolarplate, commonly at a level near the apicalregion of tlie teeth. The only change detectedis the gradual increase in size, wliicli continuesuntil the inner alveolar plate is involved, butthis is not marked, except in the case of verylarge cysts. With the increase in size the outeralveolar plate shows great bulging. Thethinned plate of bone jnelds to pressure andgives a cliaracteristic sensation known as parchment crackling .. Fio. 971.—Uental r\^i ;iita(,l lu a lirst maxillarymolar. Kemoved from a man suffering from pyorrhoeaaheolaris ; tartar has been depositedand can be seen almost to the apex of the palatalroot. (Presented to the writer by R. H. Heath.) Wlien the periosteum no longer forms newbone over the whole cyst, a soft area can bedetected where fluctuation can be obtained, and the sharp thinned margin of bone is readilydistinguished. Tlie shape of the swelling isalways romidcd, indicating the fluid natureof the tumour, for the pressure within the cyst nnist be equal in all directions, as thecontents are fluid; where the resistance isgreater in one part than another, as is thecase where a tooth is present, the globularcharacter is interrupted at that point. Painis absent unless the tumour is large enough
