[Since this article was written and in proof the work of Ogilvie has been published. As a result of an extensivestudy of the microscopic characters of recent and extinct coralsshe divides the Scleractineae into two sections—Zaphrenioidea orIlaploplirada and Ci/athophi/Uoidea or Pollaplophrada. The firstsection is divided into the sub-sections Coencmhyinata (familiesPoritidae, Madreporidae, Focilloporidae, Oculinidae) and Murocorallia(families Zaphrentidae, Turbinolidae, Amphiastraeidae, Stijlinklae). 24. Fig. XXXIII. Cj/athophylliim hcxagonum, Goldfuss, from the Devonianchalk of Gerolstein. Nat. size (from Zittels Grumhuye derIalaeontologie). THE ANTHOZOA The second section is divided into the sub-sections Septocorallia(families Cl/athophi/Uidae, Astraeidae, Fungidae) and SpinocoraUio.(family Eupsammidae). Whilst recognising the value and sug-gestiveness of Miss Ogilvies work, her classification cannot beadopted here, for it is open to serious criticism. The grounds forremoving the Eupsammidae from the other Perforata seem tobe scarcely sufficient. The sub-section Coenenchymata appearsartificial. The Murocorallia are defined as corals which havea well-built theca, whose fibrous elements are set in a direction atright angles to those of the septa. In this group are included theTurbinolidae, and it .is more than doubtful whether it can bepredicated of all members of this group that they have a thecaseparate from the septa.
