The bones of the skull make acomplete covering, or tight box, for the brain, with onlya few holes in it to allow the nerves and blood-vessels topass in and out. Tliese bones also protect the organs ofsight, smell, hearing, and taste. The Bones of the Trunk. The bones of the trunk arethe spinal column, or backbone, the ribs, and the breast-bone. The Spinal Column. The spinal column consists oftwenty-four small bones, resembling the one in the fig-ure, and two irregular ones at the lower end of these bones, and attached to them, are softcushions of gristle or cartilage. These cushions act assprings, so that running or jumping, or even walking,may not jar the body too greatly. (Fig. 10.) If allthese cushions could be piled up together, they wouldmake a
