The worm and wheel are of such a design that within thedesired operating range the winch is practically , on trucks which do not have clutch brakes there isa tendency for the winch to continue to lower a heavy loadslowly after the clutch is released, due to the inertia of thedriving parts. Where there is a clutch brake it stops the mov-ing parts at the time the clutch is disengaged, and there is notendency for the load to start down once it has been stopped, until power is applied to the winch in the reverse direction. For use with winches on trucks which do not have clutchbrakes, an automatic brake has been developed.
