Small Water Measurer Hydrometra stagnorum a bug insect walking on surface of pond looking for prey dead insects gnat to suck up


Hydrometrid bugs are of a greyish or pale brown colour relatively large amongst the infraorder Gerromorpha at around 8 to 13 mm. It has a very long, thin head, a slender body and its antennae resemble a fourth pair of legs. Usually wingless but occasionally fully winged. It often has a dark greyish or even black appearance. They are predatory will feed scavenge on fallen animals surface-dwelling springtails flies aphids. They are also great climbers and will climb plants to find insects to eat. They are scavengers or carnivores and will use their barbed rostrum to spear their prey, ( insects, small animals, mosquito gnat larvae ) dead or alive in the surface film, generally found to have five immature stages and become adults within four to six weeks. They are most often encountered running around on the water surface, being kept from sinking by surface tension and their water-repellent leg
