He was born September 9, 1827, in the town of Glin. county Lim-erick, Ireland, where he recei^•ed a rudimentary education and masteredshoe-making, and with this trade as his sole capital embarked in 1847for America, temporarily locating in Albany, New York. The following year (1848) he came to Pittsfield, Massachusetts,and found immediate employment with the Weller Brothers, John andPrederick, who then practically monopolized the making of boots andshoes in Pittsfield.
