Virtual reality tree growth. Screen display showing the roots (white) of virtual reality (VR) oil palm trees after 11 years of growth. Oil palms (Elaeis guineensis) are grown for their palm oil. These palms were planted 9 metres apart. Real wild palms were used to create three-dimensional simulated palms for the plant-modelling software AMAP. AMAP was designed by CIRAD, an international centre for agronomical research in Montpellier, France. The simulation enables plantation tree growth to be optimised by showing the ideal spacing of trees and the best time to apply water and fertilizers.
