It is twenty-four miles in circumfer-ence, and has walls 2000 feet high. Thedepth of the crater is 2700 feet. The greatSpreckles sugar plantation is on this island,and the soil grows the finest rice that isexported from Hawaii. Coffee too can begrown with advantage, and an intendingplanter would obtain good land here, rich inphosphates. Lahaina, the chief town of Maui, is a quiet. Formerlya large business was done here with whalingvessels, as many as three hundred havinganchored at the same time, but the port is nolonger a place of call for foreign trade. Corn andpotatoes can be grown here, and the cattle arefine and plentiful. Walluku Is most beautifully situated. It hasthe lovely lao Valley at the back, whilst theslopes of the great crater Haleakala stretchbefore it in front. Walluku means * the water
