Steps and wires in the winter sun alongside the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Lancashire
The low winter sun highlights the telephone wires strung out alongside the Leeds and Liverpool canal near Wheelton in Lancashire. Town Lane Bridge, “4th lock bridge” no 81 on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Lancashire. The bridge carries Town lane from Wheelton and Heapy through Johnson’s Hillock to Whittle –le-Woods. These locks are part of the Johnson's Hillocks flight of 7 locks that raise the canal 65 feet 6 inches up the hill side from Chorley to Wheelton. The steps carry the canal tow path up to the road, while the wires are glinting in the winter sunshine. The stone built hut would have been used at one time by the canal's lengths man who would use it to store his tools he used in his work of maintaining his length of canal. This bridge carries the road over the canal at lock no 61, with the locks being numbered from the Leeds end, while the bridges along the canal are numbered from the Liverpool end. This is bridge no 81. The Leeds and Liverpool runs for 127 and 3/4 miles from Leeds in Yorkshire over the Pennine hills to Liverpool on Merseyside. There are 91 locks on the canal some grouped into flights which makes the passage of boats along the canal more efficient. The locks raise or lower the canal over the hills and this flight consist of 7 locks and raises, or lowers the canal by 65 feet and 6 inches in the space of about ½ a mile. The Leeds and Liverpool locks are broad locks, being able to accommodate a barge or boat that is 14ft wide, but the locks east of Wigan are 60ft long, unlike the narrow, (7ft) ones of the midlands that are 70 feet long
