Gilman hadraised grain and vegetables the previous year,though not in great quantities. There was a grist-mill built in 1867 by C. A. Griswold and SamuelWoodward, on the overland farm, with two runs ofstone. They also built a saw-mill during the sameyear on Cave Creek. Both these mills were run bywater. This was the onlj^ saw-mill ever built in thevalley, and is still standing, there being but oneother in the county of Col. J. B. Moore. Was born in the town of Piermont, Grafton County,New Hampshire, on the twenty-eighth of October,1828. He remained there until 1840, and duringthat time received a limited education, such as canbe obtained in the common schools, lu the last-named year be went to Boston, Massachusetts, wherehe cast his first vote for President James K. 1846 he enlisted in the First Alassaehusetts Regi-ment of Volunieers, and served through the Mexi-can War. (jame to California in , where heserved seven consecutive years on the San Franciscopolice force. In 1861, at the breaking out of theRebellion, he raised a company of volunteers for theThird Regiment, of which ho was elected the month of October of the same year he was promoted to be Lieutenant Colonel. In 1863 hecame to Nevada, and commanded Camp Ruby, alsoCamp Douglas, in Utah; and was discharged in themonth of January, 1865, at his own request. Set-tling in liubj Nalley, he engaged in
