Timothy Alden,president and professor of Oriental languages and of eccle-siastical history. Mr. Alden then undertook to raise thenecessary funds to carry on the enterprise. Among thosewho honored him by their contributions, were John Adams,Ex-President of the United States, Hon. James Winthrop,of Cambridge, Mass., Major Roger Alden, aiid many othernoted men of that time. At the laying of the corner-stoneof the college building, Mr. Alden took a prominent part asa master mason. His son, Timothy Fox Alden, delivered. TIMOTHY ALDEN. a Hebrew oration, and another son, Robert W., one inLatin. While residing in Meadville, he became interested in thecondition of the Indian tribes located in Western NewYork and Pennsylvania, the Senecas and the Mansees, andwas appointed in 1787 by the Boston Society for the Prop-agating the gospel among the Indians, as missionary inthat region. A volume published by him, in 1827, givesvery entertaining details of his work in the mission field,and contains much of interest regarding the manners andcustoms of the Indians of these tribes. His anecdotes ofthe Indian chiefs Complanter, Red Jacket and Black REV. TIMOTHY ALDEN. 389 Snake, and of Mary Jamieson, the white woman of theGenesee Valley, are extremely interesting.
