La Romieu is one of the essential stages of the Pilgrim trail, the Routes of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Its remarkable collegiate church is also classified as a “World Heritage Site ” by UNESCO. It is also a medieval bastide with typical architecture of the Gers. Finally, the legend of Angelina's cats gives it a unique charm and a little touch of originality. LA ROMIEU, A VILLAGE OF PILGRIMS The history of La Romieu is closely linked to the pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The village is on the Voie Podiensis, which comes from Puy-en-Velay. It is also located at the junction between the track and the path which joins the Notre-Dame-de-Rocamadour sanctuary. In 1062, two pilgrim monks from Rome extended their pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. They stop off in a small town and decide to stop there to found a priory, a rescue and a hospital. The Gascons of the village call them the “ Roumious ”, the pilgrims of Rome. They will leave their nickname to posterity to designate this stage village, which they founded. In La Romieu the pilgrims were safe. The Benedictine priory had a " sauveté ". It is a zone of refuge, located around the church. Inside, human laws were no longer valid, only the “ Peace of God ” applied, along with the right of asylum offered by the Church to its occupants. Often it was peasants or vagabonds who took shelter from reprisals and violence from the lords. The pilgrimage routes are not always safe, the rescued people marked out the Ways of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle to protect the pilgrims. La Romieu also had a " hospital ". In the Middle Ages, it was more a place of assistance than a care establishment LA ROMIEU, A MEDIEVAL BASTIDE Little by little, the rescued people are transformed either into " castelnaux ", villages under the protection of a castle, or into bastides. This is the case of La Romieu, whose humble priory was then surrounded by a wall. During the 100 years war, the village will go under English auspices to
