It is the result of long and patient research in originalsources in the Archives of Europe and America, and presentsmuch new matter hitherto unpublished. The author has spared nocost and pains in gaining access to the original documents andother sources, many of which are indicated by the photographicreproductions. The work is written in a style which, it is hoped, will provereadable, but at the same time keep the reader in touch with thesources. No statement has been made in the work without refer-ence to a reliable source.
