WAREHAM, MASSACHUSETTS 205 Corfe, and, after being dragged through the streets of the town, was hanged andquartered here. During the civil wars of the seventeenth century it again became the objectof contention between the two parties, being repeatedly taken and retaken, afterits first occupation for the Parliament in 1642. The townspeople were chiefly loyalto the Crowu. Their dreadful malignancy was used as an argimient by SirAnthony Ashley Cooper for the complete destruction of the town, as it would cer-tainly be occupied by the royal forces on the first opportunity, unless it was pluckeddown and made no town. The ruin averted then was accomplished one hundredand twenty years later, July 25, 1762, when nearly the whole town was consumed byfire; but two years after, it rose from its ashes fairer than before.
