Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich Mueller (1825-1896), German-Australian botanist. Mueller studied botany at Kiel University, attaining his doctorate in 1847.
Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich Mueller (1825-1896), German-Australian botanist. Mueller studied botany at Kiel University, attaining his doctorate in 1847. That same year he sailed to Australia and settled in Adelaide. He became Government Botanist for Victoria in 1853 and established the National Herbarium of Victoria. He took part in and organised expeditions and received numerous awards for his botanical work. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1861, and knighted (KCMG) in 1879. He was awarded a German knighthood in 1867 (becoming von Mueller), and was made a baron (Freiherr) in 1871. This engraving dates from circa 1889.
