By having anangle column at the extremity, it appears to have turned roundand formed a cortile, and perhaps united with the Postsceniumor river-front next the Naumachia, as shown by the dotted lines. The theatre being built on the slope of a hill, it became ne-cessary to protect it from being flooded by the waters whichwould rush down the face of the cliff. This has been done bycutting a trench, 6 ft. 6 ins. wide, and 32 ft. 6 ins. deep, whichruns round so much of the outer wall as abuts upon the hill *• Palladio, Arch, i, 13.
