He defended by carefullyprepared logic the peculiar doctrines of Calvinism,which had been assailed in the Methodist pulpits andpublications of the section. He was not satisfiedwith acting on the defensive, but violently assailedArminianism and Methodist episcopacy. He declaredthe episcopacy to be a system of one-man power, a. *alM i REV. He also affected to show by cunningly de-vised sophistry that Arminianism logically leads todespotism and that Calvinism leads to civil support of his logic he cited history to show thatpredestinarians have always been the friends of civilliberty and Arminians the friends of monarchy. Hearing and hearing of this sermon, a majority ofthe students of Emory and Henry College petitionedMr. Collins to reply to it. Dr. Rosss controversialsermon was preached on Saturday. Mr. Collins re-quested him to repeat to the congregation on Mondaythe leading points in his Saturday sermon, which hedid, Mr. Collins being present and taking notes. Itwas agreed that on Sunday week thereafter Mr. Col-lins should reply to this sermon in the same two weeks Mr. Collins spent in laborious prep-aration for his reply. Fortunately,
