Fuel-in-Oil (FiO) technology. Fluorescent lighting (left) being used to show the dye (glowing, right) added to diesel fuel as part of the Fuel-in-Oil (FiO) technology. Advanced diesel engines can contaminate engine oil with fuel if the injection process is not optimised. This dye visualisation method allows for real-time, rapid-feedback, on-engine assessment of this type of oil contamination. This work is being carried out at the Fuels Engines and Emissions Research Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA. Photographed in 2009.
