It is asserted by the manufacturer that by means ofthis method of arc welding manganese steel can bewelded to the worn surface of open-hearth or Bessemersteel track work with the same ease as one would weldordinary steel. In general, the outfit is adapted for weld-ing rail joints, disintegrated and cupped joints and forrail bonding; also for shop use in welding broken andworn axle buttons, brakeshoe holders and many otheritems of electric railway equipment. When operatedfrom the shop circuit the equipment may be used forcutting as well as for welding. The apparatus is furnished with or without a truckand with a welded steel cover for protection against theweather for outside work. The approximate weight of. Motor Shell with Lug Destroyed, Also Showing the Style ofArc Holder Appearance of the Motor Shell After the Lug Had Been Arc-Welded to It Melbourne will mean a considerable delay in the initia-tion of electric traction. The new site is ideal from thecondenser point of view, and the foundations are alsobetter. At present 300 men are engaged in making thenecessary excavations for the foundations. None ofthe machinery is expected to arrive until the middle of1914, when the power house steel work and equipmentwill be landed from England. the equipment without the truck is 1000 lb. The accom-panying halftones show an old motor case with a lugbroken off and afterward welded in position. The timeoccupied in making this repair was one hour andthirty minutes and the cost $ This figure includeslabor, electrical energy and material, and is based onunit prices of 1 cent per kw-hr. for energy and 30 centsper hour for labor.
