For experimental tests and commercial purposes the dif-ferent parts of the kernels can be more or less accuratelyseparated. This is done by softening them in water andthen passing them into mills. First the hull is removed, thegerm is freed and the starch body broken up. Water beingused, the germs, which are lighter in weight, rise to thesurface and are separated. Starch is the basis of a large numberof products, as for instance, glucose, grape-sugar, dextrine,and gum. Among them, glucose is the most important,next to the starch itself. The oil is isolated from the germsby pressure after drying and grinding them to a fine residue constitutes the corn cake and corn meal whichis used for feeding live stock. The oil itself is used by paintmanufacturers, soap makers and for the production ofrubber substitutes, among which the corn rubber or vul-canized corn oil is one of the most important.
