Bay of Biscay Atlantic surf surging back and forth beneath the long iron footbridge leading to the Rocher de la Vierge or Rock of the Virgin at Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The bridge was designed in 1887 by French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel.

Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France: Bay of Biscay Atlantic surf surging around the latticework supporting the long iron footbridge that has linked the Rocher de la Vierge (Rock of the Virgin) to the mainland since 1887. The bridge was designed by civil engineer Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923), who designed many bridges for the French railway network, but is best known for the world-famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed by his company and built for the 1889 Universal Exposition. Eiffel also contributed to the building of the Statue of Liberty in New York.
