Warfleet Creek and River Dart View, With Jetty, Mooring Ropes, Boats and reflections with Riverside Houses #2.

Landscape view from the jetty, looking towards the river Dart from Warfleet Creek. This sheltered creek at the river’s mouth, gets its name from Saxon times referring to ‘Welflut’, the stream that runs into it. During the English Civil War, Royalist troops came down Warfleet Valley to attack Dartmouth in 1643, but in 1646 they were defeated by Nicholas Roope and his men. At one time the quay here was a bustling hive of activity with it’s own international trading vessels, with rope making, four mills, a bakehouse and a brewhouse. A group of lime kilns still stand here today. There was also a unique pottery here, formed by Howard Koppenhagen in 1948 with production starting in 1949. It produced Artistic ware including colourful Gurgling fish shaped jugs. Today it is visited by tourists and locals enjoying the safe water in the creek to swim, kayak and paddle board. It is currently being monitored for pollution.
