Seated in one of the easy arm-chairs of the piazza, one seems tohimself to be upon the island, but not of it; to be overlooking thenatural and artificial existences surrounding, as though he were gaz-ing from mountain heights. Wherever a large expanse of oceanwaters forms part of the view outspread, there need be no greatelevation to produce these impressions, since
