Fluid removed from knee. Syringe containing blood-stained synovial fluid removed (aspirated) from the swollen knee (effusion) of a 79-year-old female

Fluid removed from knee. Syringe containing blood-stained synovial fluid removed (aspirated) from the swollen knee (effusion) of a 79-year-old female patient after a twisting injury. Joint aspiration, or arthrocentesis, is conducted in order to collect fluid from inside the knee to relieve swelling, or for analysis including cell count, culture for bacteria, and examination for crystals, such as uric acid.
