Whereas in the paths of the jungle we often did notknow how to make our way through the bogs andmorasses, here we marched tluough farms and villages,most of them lying in the shade of oil palms, and allvery much alike. (Illus. 171.) The roads were coveredwith fragrant Citronella grass, and were exposed tothe pitiless rays of the tropical sun. Under thesecircumstances w^e went forward as rapidly as possible,for there was nothing worth collecting to be seen bythe roadside. Mildbraed, especially, found this country.
