Howard Florey (1898-1968). Caricature of the Australian pathologist Howard Florey holding a Petri dish. Florey is best known for pioneering, in 1938, the extraction and clinical use of penicillin, 10 years after it was discovered by Alexander Fleming. As a result of his and his teams work, the antibiotic was available before the end of World War Two, saving thousands of soldiers' lives. Florey was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize in medicine, with his assistant Chain, and Fleming, for this work.
