Blue plaque on the home of Eliza Fraser in Stromness, Orkney. She was shipwrecked off Australia in 1836.


An English woman shipwrecked at K'gari, off the coast of Queensland, Australia, on 22 May 1836. After being rescued, she wrote of being captured and enslaved by the indigenous Butchalla people. The island was renamed 'Fraser Island', in honour of her deceased husband Captain James Fraser. It was named back to its traditional name of K’gari in June 2023.
