The national highway system was constructe by the military government of the Edo Bakufu in the early 17th century . This system stretched from Nihonbashi in Edo(present-day Tokyo) to points all over Japan. Tumagojuku is one of the lodging villages of the Nakasendo highway and this portion has been chosen by the Ministry of Education as a Preservation District for Groupes of Historic Buildings.
