They are the only plants, as a class, that can assimilate the nitrogen of the air as part of their food. This action is entirely due to the presence of nitrogen fixing bacteria. The nitrogen so obtained remains in the ground when the plants decay, thereby enriching the soil. The application of bacteria culture to the seed of legumes, when planting, greatly increases the nitrogen gathering power, and greatly increases also the yield of the crop. With one exception, it is necessary to get a culture specifically for the crop to be treated.
