Esrum Monastery, Northern Zealand. Denmark. Esrum Monastery was established in 1151 by the Order of Cistercians, or the White Monks and dedicated Virgin Maria. The monastery was the base for the Cistercians in their Scandinavian and northern German expansion. They became one of the biggest farmland owner in Scandinavia. Today only a fraction - the church building - remains, but during the Middelage the monastery was the largest building at all. During the 16th century most of the buildings was teared down and used for building the Frederiksborg and Kronborg castles, as Denmark converted to Protestantism.
