Scott's South Pole party. Polar party led by Robert Falcon Scott, at the Norwegian tent at the South Pole in January 1912. A group of five (Scott, Bowers, Evans, Wilson, Oates) reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912 after a trek of more than two months, but found that the Norwegian party led by Roald Amundsen had arrived before them. This attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole was part of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913, also Terra Nova Expedition). They were part of a shore party of 34. Scott and the others in the polar party died on their return journey. Photograph by Bowers, developed later by Herbert George Ponting.
