Slipped disc. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scans of four axial sections through an intervertebral disc (red) showing herniation. The intervertebral discs separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae) from each other. If one becomes displaced, as here, it can put pressure on the surrounding nerves, causing back pain and even paralysis. Bed rest is the best treatment, although surgery may be required if the symptoms are severe.
