Laughing hyena or spotted hyena pup (Crocuta crocuta) in Kruger Park South Africa at night. The laughing or spotted hyena is the largest of the hyenas and is a powerful carnivore that lives in packs, cohabiting in underground dens. Adults weigh up to 80 kg. Usually found on the plains of southern and eastern Africa, it is mostly nocturnal and will eat fresh meat and carrion. It is named for both its spots and for its piercing howl and a high, braying cry, sounding like hysterical laughter.
