The discussion on how to make hy- drangeas blue, begun in The Review of October 14 and continued in the issues of October 21 and November 4, has interested me, and as a grower of hy- drangeas I would like to give my expe- riences in this respect. I have found that hydrangea flowers will become blue if alum is used in the water; also that if the soil does not contain iron, nails and old metal placed in the soil or water will make the flowers blue. I have taken pink-flowering plants and made them produce blue flowers by these methods. At Columbus, Ga., the hydrangeas are all blue, due to the fact that alum is used in purifying the water for drink- ing purposes. Moreover, the soil at Columbus contains iron. On our ranch the soil contains iron, but we have a private water supply, in which alum is not used. As all the hydrangeas not treated are pink, it stands to reason that both alum and iron are needed to change the color of the flowers. I start the treatment when the flower heads begin to form, watering the plants twice a week with the mixture of alum and water. To a 1-gallon can of water I use as much alum as will safely rest on two foreflngers. When the flowers are about to open, I dis- continue this treatment and use clear water. By these means—using alum in water and the iron in the soil—I have obtained all the blue hydrangeas I wanted, and I am sure that anyone trying this formula will have similar results. J. C. Armstrong. CONTROL OF HYDRANGEA COLOR. I have become interested in the dis- cussion in recent numbers of The Re- view on the control of color in flower- ing Hydrangea Hortensia. I fully be- lieved that there was a practical method in use that insured success, and also that some of the expert growers would submit the answer, but this has not happened, and the replies from competent correspondents, lea
