Ancient timber-framed houses beside the River Lauch at Colmar, Alsace, Grand Est, France, add to the colourful attractions of La Petite Venise (Little Venice), an area of the city once occupied by wine producers, market gardeners and craftsmen that now attracts numerous tourists to its hotels and riverside restaurants.

Colmar, Alsace, Grand Est, France: La Petite Venise or Little Venice blends colourful timber-framed quayside houses such as these by the Port Turenne, bright with red window box flowers, with larger hotels and riverside restaurants lining the canalised River Lauch. In medieval Colmar, the area was known as the Krutenau quarter and it stretched as far as the city's semi-rural suburbs. It was inhabited by a community of wine producers, market gardeners and boatmen who used flat-bottomed craft to carry their produce up and down the shallow river. Similar boats are still in use today, although now they ferry visitors along the Lauch on guided tours.
