View NW of St George's-in-the-East, Shadwell, London E1, England, UK, built 1715-23 (built & fitted out 1714-29), one of six London churches by Nicholas Hawksmoor. English Baroque & Classical styles with white ashlar masonry (Portland stone), an eastern apse, a tall western lantern tower & pepperpot turrets. Several entrances gave access to seats of different comfort & cost. During the 1840s & '50s the church was at the centre of the St George's riots over church ritual & vestments. The original interior was gutted in May 1941 during the Blitz, by a German incendiary bomb meant for London's docklands. In the early 1960s a modern church interior was built inside the E end of the standing walls & an open courtyard with flats was created in the former nave.
