Itwas not difficult to tempt Margaret downto the bank of the Orwell to see her lover. So when the moon is up and whilstlabourers and servants are gathered in thehuge kitchen of the Priory Farm at theannual harvest supper, Margaret steals awayto the shore of Downham Reach to awaither lovers arrival. On her way she en-counters a weird character known asRobinson Crusoe, a half-witted fisherman. His arms, legs, and almost hiswhole body were encircled with bones ofhorses, amulets, rings, etc., to ward off hisever-present and mischievous tormentors, forhe was possessed with the idea that he wasever pursued by a legion of devils. Margaret stands on the shore oppositeFreston Tower, or, rather, between this towerand the Cat-House, which, if report be true,played an important part in the contrabandtrade of the river. Margaret is joined, in due course, by hersmuggler lover Will Laud, and John long tries to persuade her to join hisship and elope with him, but she is terrified,for in his conversation Laud has confessedthat he is Hudson, one of the most notorioussmugglers and desperate characters of theday.
