Kieffer is compara- tively free from blight and promises well, but I have not seen enough of it to recommend it very positively. The Illinois State Horticultural Society recommends the following list: Tyson, Seckel, Kieffer, Flemish Beauty and Howell. Seckel Pear. Standard and Dwarf. The standard of excellence in the pear, small but of the highest flavor and produc- tion. Tree a stout, slow, erect grower. Season Sep- tember and October. Gives Excellent Results, both as standard and dwarf, succeeds well throughout the North- ern, Middle and Western States. Vermont Beauty. Standard and Dwarf.— It is call< d the "Peerless" and described as follows: Hardy in Vermont and Can- ada; quality the best, good seckel. shipper. It is a seedling found on Grand Island, Lake Champlain. This proves its hardiness. It is a free grower, an abundant and annual bearer. The fruit ripens a little later than the Seckel, much excels that variety in size and beauty. In form the fruit is of full medium size, obovate, yellow, and covered on the sunny side with a bright carmine red, making it indeed a beauty. The flesh is rich, juicy, aromatic, best. It will stand at the head of fall pears. It is highly recommended by umimpeachable authori- ties. It does well as standard and dwarf. Dwarf Pears should be planted so that the point where the bud is on the quince root be two or three inches below the surfac
