Culture counter. Scientist using an automated device for measuring the number of microbes in a culture. He is pipetting a sample which contains microbes into one of the machine's tubes. The tube can be kept at a constant temperature whilst the microbes multiply as they feed on a nutrient gel. The growth of any microbe colonies can be monitored over time and the results displayed as a graph on a computer screen (at centre right). Here the total number of microbes is shown as a red line and their rate of growth is shown as a purple line. Photograph of a Rapid Automated Bacterial Impedance Technology (RABIT) machine.
