Commendation isdated December 18, 1918. He also boasts a regimental citationfor duties discharged under fire and trying circumstances. Fora time he was attached to the 33rd Division U. S. A. in the Armyof Occupation taking troops through part of Belgium andLuxemburg to the town of Mersch, Luxemburg. He reachedhome unwounded and was discharged May 20, 1919. 47. In August, 1916, Richardson Shoemaker, Jr., enlisted inCompany C, 1st Regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guards,then stationed at El Paso, Texas. When the World War wasdeclared in April, 1917, Company C was given guard duty in andabout Philadelphia, encamping most of the summer at GriffithsPark, Lansdowne. In September they were taken to CampHancock, Augusta, Ga., and remained there in training untilApril, 1918. While there, the Pennsylvania National Guardswere made part of the 28th Division of the U. S. A. and the FirstRegiment became the 109th. While at Hancock, private Shoe-maker was made a wagoner in the Supply Company. He em-barked for overseas May 1, 1919, and was in active service duringJune, July, August and September. On the 26th of Septemberin the Argonne he was seriously wounded. He remained inFrance in hospitals until January 10, 1919, when he was senthome. Previous to being wounded he had had seven horseskilled. 48
