The 1906 caption reads: "Saint Boniface preaching in Germany. The English priest Winfred, better known as Saint Boniface, is called the Apostle of the Germans. For fifty years he travelled among the wildest tribes, risking his life almost daily that he might bring his message to the heathen people. He was finally martyred in the year 755, by the Frisians. He continued exhorting them to the last, even as he was struck down by their battle axes."
