Lord Mount Stephen built ‘Gosmore’, Lemsford, Hertfordshire. It is a large house on the opposite side of Marford Road from the church built as a District Nurse Clinic to provide Nursing Care for villagers. Born George Stephen in 1829 to a Scottish carpenter he was eventually apprenticed to an Aberdeen draper and seven years later went to Montreal in Canada after being invited by his cousin who was also a draper. George prospered both as a draper and then a was one of the men responsible for completing the Canadian Pacific Railway which made him a large fortune. He became President of the Bank of Montreal and was President of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The churchyard at Lemsford is his last resting place.
