We transfer the pertinent essentials ofthat sketch to these pages. Leonard Ballou was born in Cumberland, Feb. 23, 1794, andin his boyhood attended the common school of the town. Heafterwards pursued his studies in a private school preparatory toa classical course, working in the mean time in his fathers shopand on the farm.
