Caption: Shigatse, TAR, China - Jul 2001. Monks felt boots outside a prayer room at Tashilhumpo Monastery in Shigatse, inner Tibet. The seat of the panchen Lama, a reincarnated Buddha and the second most important Lama in Tibet, down from the Dalai Lama, Tashilhumpo was once one of the most important religious institutions in the country. Despite the Panchen Lama living in exile, Tashilumpho continues to function as a monastery and centre for scholarly disciplines, however not to the extent that it did before Chinese occupation of Tibet in the early 1950's.
