Running of Bulls The Camargue Guardians take part in the running of bulls through a Provence village street on the way to the bullring. The young men of the village demonstrate bravery during the festival by running ahead of the bulls or trying to capture them. Locally called the Encierro, or Abravado, the Camargue Guardians on their white horses herd the black bulls through the streets on their way to the bullring for the Courses Camarguaises, a non lethal bull event. The Camargue horse is native to the Rhone River delta in southern France. A primitive breed, some say due to the strong resemblance to the horse paintings in the Lascaux cave created around 15,000 BC. The Pheonicians and the Romans used the Camargue horse as did the Spanish Conquistadors and the army of Napoleon. The horses have inhabited the grasslands Rhone delta for thousands of years. They are used by the Guardians or Camargue cowboys to manage the wild black bulls raised in the Camargue for the bull rings of Spain and southern France.
